John opens his account of the life, death and resurrection of the Lord with the confession that the man Jesus, who lived and worked among people for 30 years, is also the one who created heaven and earth: the eternal God! It is in this light, then, that we should read his entire Gospel. The one whom John loved and worshiped as his God and Savior was at the same time fully human. Tired from the journey, he sat at a well and asked for water. He stood at the grave of a beloved friend and shed tears.
And this man was completely God. He could say that he did everything God did; that all must honor him as they honor the Father; and that they should believe in him as one believes in God. What creature, human or angel, would say that? He spoke to men in human language, but his voice was the voice of the Creator. When he came and called his sheep, they followed him as surely as nonexistent things came into existence in the beginning when he called them. This Eternal and Almighty had become man, and as a man a servant who washed the feet of his own and finally humbled himself to the point of death on the cross. Of his own free will, he gave up his life in order to take it back.
John wrote his gospel so that we might believe that the man Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this faith we might have eternal life.
