In his second letter, Peter warns believers of impending danger: false teachers will come with attractive doctrines. In order to remain steadfast in the face of all these temptations and enticements, they must strive diligently to grow in sanctification and in the knowledge of the Lord.
When Judas writes his letter a few years later, he finds that the false brothers have already invaded. He urgently and passionately calls on believers to fight for the faith that has been handed down once and for all.
With the increasing gloom and confusion gripping Christianity, believers need light on their path. Accordingly, both Peter and Jude refer to Old Testament examples, the prophetic word and the teachings of the Lord and his apostles. Both announce the coming of the Lord to judgment and thus urge the brothers and sisters to separate themselves from the teachings and works of the false brothers. They conclude their solemn warnings with a look to the Only One who can preserve and perfect His beloved in His power and grace: our great God and Savior.
